Network Documentation
Network Documentation
Over the years Digital Networks had acquired plenty of experience documenting all kind of networks from radio transmission systems, community Wi-Fi networks, satellite hubs and networks, Wide and Local Area Networks, PBX and Voice related networks, IP based surveillance, etc.
Typically the documentation of a network begins verifying and discussing with the client the existing documentation, if any, then a physical audit is performed and then the preparation of drawings in MS-Visio, and spreadsheets with equipment data in MS-Excel..Depending the scope of the work and client’s expectations, the documentation produces rack profiles, logic diagrams, computer room layouts, server cabinet layouts and topology diagrams, an excel spreadsheet with network devices data such as IP, MAC Address, serial numbers, tag numbers, property numbers, device model, manufacturer information, etc.
A rack profile is a pictorial diagram that represents the equipment rack or cabinet with all equipment installed such as data hubs, switches, routers, servers, etc. physically installed at each data distribution facility. Also, information such as device names, serial numbers, IP addresses, property numbers and other relevant information is collected during the physical audit and presented as part of the drawings to be developed.
A topology drawing including passive and active equipment such as fiber optic and UTP backbones, data equipment, hubs, switches, routers, servers farms, Storage Area Networks (SAN) equipment. Information such as device names, serial numbers, IP addresses, property numbers and other relevant information are also presented in the Topology diagram.
Rack profiles drawings are usually presented in 81/2” x 11” paper and the Topology diagrams are usually presented in a 17" x 11" and up to 36” x 42” in premium grade drawing paper. The documentation is handed to the client with a report usually depicting, if necessary, areas of improvements or connections found to be incorrect.
A documentation project is priced based on time expected to be spend in the process of performing the documentation and after a walk-thru and meetings with the clients technical personnel.
The deliverable of the Network Documentation and Assessment is a comprehensive presentation consisting of reports, drawings, graphics and recommendations based on the information gained through interviews, field-testing and analysis. Network assessment findings and documentation is compiled and professionally presented.
The deliverables includes a report explaining any issue found and what are the alternatives to improve the network efficiency and robustness.
